Gender anxieties exist in psychoanalytic training environments. This is not controversial. But these anxieties are typically unthought and unaddressed. Given these realities, how does a psychoanalyst find their way to working analytically with transness? Daniel Polyak will explore this question through the discussion of case material and the transphobic anxieties that can arise when this material is presented in the context of psychoanalytic training.

Daniel Polyak, LP, MA is a New York City based psychoanalyst and psychotherapist. He also teaches in the Women and Gender Studies program at Hunter College. He has published and presented on a range of topics including the intersections of queer theory and psychoanalytic practice, the clinical relevance of cisgender, and the implications of psychoanalytic practice in a neoliberal context. He is the author, most recently, of a chapter called "On Growing Up: A Cautionary Tale for Psychoanalysts" in the edited volume The Queerness of Childhood: Essays from the Other Side of the Looking Glass (2022).
