This course, through readings and clinical vignettes, examines the clinical inquiry from various interpersonal perspectives. Emphasis will be on such topics as the detailed inquiry, transference-countertransference analysis, the therapeutic role of reenactments in the experiential field, neutrality and coparticipation inquiry, plus narcissism and the analysis of the self. Traditional and contemporary interpersonal approaches will be contrasted, and the “relational” - interpersonal debate will be reviewed.

Contemporary Kleinian Viewpoints

This course covers the major contributions of the most important
post-Kleinians such as Bion, Hanna Segal, Betty Joseph, and Thomas
Ogden, and explores contemporary Kleinian clinical viewpoints and
issues such as psychosis; phantasy, imagination, and the individual’s
relation to culture; therapeutic action and interaction; and the
clinical use of projective identification. It will compare and contrast
contemporary Kleinian with interpersonal views.

The focus of this seminar will be to read contemporary essays on trauma, dissociation, and treatment. All participants will be encouraged to reflect on the readings through the lens of their own work with traumatized patients.

will explore the defining aspects of present day Freudian theory
and clinical practice. Contrasts to interpersonal/relational approaches
will be emphasized.

Kohut, Self Psychology and Current Derivatives

The basic concepts of Kohut’s self psychology and their evolution
in current self psychological thinking will be reviewed. The clinical
usefulness of a concept of self and the postmodern challenge thereof
will be discussed and studied in pertinent case vignettes.
