Presentation: "Psychoanalysis, Religion, and Aestheism"
Freud referred to himself famously as "a Godless Jew". He is often compared to Nietzsche, who pronounced that "God is dead" and to Marx, who claimed that "religion is the opiate of the masses." Yet Freud maintained very close relationships with colleagues who were deeply spiritual and relgious. What does this tell us about the place of religion and aetheism in psychoanalysis? In an attempt to move beyond stereotypes, Dr. Frie will examine the relationship between Freud, Jung, Pfister and Binswanger.

This presentation reviews the modern history of theories of homosexuality, up to the removal of “homosexuality” from APA's Diagnostic Manual.  Clinical debates about “reparative therapies” are then placed in the context of contemporary “culture wars.”  The presentation goes on to discuss clinical issues surrounding sexual conversion therapies, including inflated claims of “cures” and harmful side effects.  The presentation concludes with discussions of the many ethical concerns raised by clinical efforts to convert an individual's sexual orientation.

The study of human sexual identities is changing and these changes are forcing clinicians to think about sexualities in ways never envisioned by our professional forbears.  This presentation reviews historical assumptions underlying the theory of bisexuality.  The next section introduces the reader to the role of categories and hierarchies in general, and to the clinical meaning of sexual hierarchies in particular. This is followed by a discussion of the meanings and uses of the “natural.”  The final section concludes with a commentary on intersexuality as an example of both the social and surgical construction of gender.

Presentation: Dignity Lost and Regained
Where: Society for Ethical Culture, New York,
When: Sunday, Oct. 22, at 11:15 a.m.
Fee: $100.
Open to: Public

Dignity Regained or Lost will address the importance of being esteemed and valued by ourselves and others, a kind of dignity that is essentially social.
Dignity is an article of human faith, bestowed by self or other but the sense of dignity is shaped and understood differently depending on the various cultural systems in  our world. How can we therefore obtain a universal agreement on what human dignity consists of in the face of such competing systems of values and standards.
How can we achieve more clarity as to what article 3 of the Geneva Convention: …'that there be no outrages upon human dignity' means to convey.
In past and present times of war and abuse the value and the dignity of a human being has often been stepped on. How is it possible to hold on to an image of self-respect at the moment when the other is not confirming but actively attacking it?
We are sadly familiar in our tormented times with the ultimately useless compensatory response of violence and retaliation.

The loss of dignity is difficult to restore because the assault on dignity and self-worth is also an assault on the adequate functioning of the mind itself. Human beings when violated by significant others, and thus humiliated, lose the capacity to reflect and the capacity to feel.
Longterm psychological treatment is effective because it addresses these blockages to remembering and feeling, allowing for an acceptance of what is often the tragic truth of a life, of our lives.
Can one still esteem what others may hate? That is the challenge that can only be met through compassion for suffering, trained on suffering.
Psychoanalysis gives us the tools necessary to expand our capacity for such tolerance. To build the human capacity for compassion, with self and with other is the ultimate resort of the victimized, disrespected human being and it is also this capacity with which can unite the various culture bound understandings of dignity.

, 2006

Panel: David Appelbaum, Psy.D., Anton H. Hart, Ph.D., and Stefan R. Zicht, Psy.D.
Panel name: Supervision: Extensions to the Traditional Framework
Where:
The International Federation of Psychoanalytic Education (IFPE) Seventeenth Annual Interdisciplinary Conference; at The Westin Pasadena, Pasadena, California
When:Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 3:30

This panel focuses on the topic of supervision from several interrelated experientially focused psychoanalytic perspectives in consideration of how supervision might best facilitate the transmission of psychoanalytic knowledge and resourcefulness between its participants. The presenters will undertake an examination of an array of elements of the traditional supervisory framework that they claim, may constrain its potential openness, and thereby its depth and reach. Such elements include, but are not limited to:
-the nature of negative supervisory impact in the development of a supervisee¹s own analytic voice and autonomy, and how this may be most usefully addressed
-the ubiquitous, problematic though adaptive, dissociations of a non-confidential, evaluative training framework, and series of proposed potential solutions including the implementation of fully confidential consultation for trainees about their clinical work alongside traditional, evaluation-based supervision
-the necessity of supervision providing a frankly psychoanalytic (i.e. psychotherapeutic) experiential encounter for the supervisee, conveying experientially the very idiom that it is intending to impart.
The presenters propose a series of modifications of supervisory theory and praxis, as well as to the overall structure and goals of supervision, in a series of conceptual extensions to its framework.
