Hannah Wallerstein, Ph.D.

Wed. March 4, 2020

8:30 - 10:00pm

William Alanson White Institute

20 W. 74 St., Room 3A

Description:

In the last two decades gender has exploded as a concept—new gender identifications have proliferated, as have new forms of embodiment and possible technological interventions. This rapid change demands new ways of thinking both in and out of the consulting room. How do we understand something that can be at once fluid and yet powerfully fixed, socially inscribed and yet profoundly personal? This presentation with outline a theoretical framework for grappling with this complexity.  It will propose to think of gender as a representational form linked to subjective authorization.   Beginning with Freud and then turning to Winnicott and Loewald, it will articulate gender’s relation to both sexed embodiment and separation from primary objects. It will then turn to implications for thinking about gender variance and transgender phenomena, using case material for elaboration.

Presenter:

Dr. Hannah Wallerstein is a postdoctoral Fellow in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalytic Studies at the Austen Riggs Center. She completed her doctoral training at the City University of New York and her predoctoral internship at North Central Bronx Hospital. Dr. Wallerstein has presented and published on gender identity and transgender phenomena, psychosis and historical trauma, and the concept of truth and its clinical consequences.
