Description:

Drs. Feit and Slomowitz will offer introductory remarks about their recent book and the work with Orthodox Jewish sexual minorities. Dr. Weltz will present a summary of her doctoral research, titled I Don't Fear God, I Fear God's People: How Ten Orthodox Jewish Lesbian Women Experience the Orthodox Jewish Community. Dr. Weltz focuses on the under researched and under recognized issues that these women face because of their gender and their sexual orientation. Dr. Weltz will also address some of the clinical implications of her research.

 

Presenters:

Alison Feit, Ph.D., teaches at Stony Brook University, St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute and at the China American Psychoanalytic Alliance. She is an Associate Editor of the journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis and a member of the Artist Group, the Sexual Abuse Service, and the Trauma Service at the William Alanson White Institute in New York. Her most recent work is her co-edited book Homosexuality, Transsexuality, Psychoanalysis and Traditional Judaism (2019). Dr. Feit’s work also appears in R. Gartner’s Trauma and Countertrauma, Resilience and Counterresilience : Insights from Psychoanalysts and Trauma Experts (2016) and R. C. Curtis’ Psychoanalytic Case Studies from an Interpersonal-Relational Perspective (2018). She maintains a private practice in Manhattan.

 

Alan Slomowitz, Ph.D., is a Supervising Analyst, on Faculty, Director of the William Alanson White Institute’s Pre-Doctoral Psychology Internship Program, and Director of Outreach at the William Alanson White Institute. He is on faculty at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. Dr. Slomowitz’s most recent co-edited book is Homosexuality, Transsexuality, Psychoanalysis and Traditional Judaism (2019). He also edited Interpersonal Psychoanalysis and the Enigma of Consciousness (2018) with Dr. Edgar Levenson and the new release of Dr. Levenson’s book The Purloined Self (2016). He is also on the Editorial Board of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. Dr. Slomowitz is in private practice in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in New York City.

 

Shelby Weltz, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist and on faculty at NYU School of Medicine. As a clinical instructor at NYU's Steven A. Cohen Military Family Center, Dr. Weltz provides therapy to veterans and their family members and supervises psychology doctoral students. In addition to working at NYU, Dr. Weltz is in private practice in New York City where she delivers trauma-informed care that incorporates both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approaches. Dr. Weltz received her Psy.D. from The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
