Description:

Treatment with queer couples in polyamorous (poly) families is an area of work for which clinical language, frameworks and expertise are relatively underdeveloped. For cases such as these, multisystemic genogram and psychoanalytic models of triadic relationships and role-within-group are appropriate but insufficient for comprehensive conceptualization. In this presentation, I, a queer Latino cisman, illustrate some of the relational complexities that have emerged in my couple's work with two men, one of cis and one of trans experience, both cohabiting members of a poly family. This presentation focuses on how the couple join together despite important differences in their attitudes toward polyamory, alliances of priority within their family(ies), and social locations. I will elaborate case material relating how these issues arise within the therapeutic space in interaction with my own identifications and implicit assumptions about romantic partnerships.

Presenter:

Félix L. García del Castillo, Ph.D. studied clinical psychology at The City College of New York and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Callen-Lorde. His academic projects include original research on hormone therapy in TGNB minors (forthcoming) and the neurofunctional correlates of gender congruence (García, 2018). He has presented at national conferences on the topics of decolonization of clinical training (Morales et al., 2019), group and in-home therapy with Latino fathers in Central L.A. (Bermúdez, Morales-Rodriguez, García & Mohammad, 2016), and stereotype, prejudice and object relations theory (García, 2012). He is a founding member of Aliadxs for Mental Health, a collective of professionals and trainees serving the Latinx community.
