“Dreaming Ourselves Forward”

Wed. June 5, 2019

8:30 - 10:00pm

William Alanson White Institute

20 W. 74 St., Library (2nd Floor)

Description:

“If you knew who I really am…” (Studies in Gender and Sexuality, 2019, Vol. 20, No. 1) is about my work as a white lesbian analyst with a white gay male patient who carries a secret feminine self of which he is mortifyingly ashamed.  In the course of the treatment, analyst and patient must find space, both between them and inside each, to enable the patient to address his shame and to develop an authentic gender identity. Discovering, creating and sustaining psychic space in the midst of both current and historical forces of racism, sexism, homophobia and gender policing was of primary importance in this treatment. “Dreaming the culture forward” is something that Taylor Mac, a transgender performance artist and singer speaks a lot about in the context of “hold[ing] the oppressor accountable and lift those at the bottom of the culture up first” (Mac, 2017). This presentation will look at how the patient’s and the analyst’s dreams, fantasies and reverie served to dream them into being and creating a live psychic space within each of them and in the field between.
