Course Description

Adolescents cry out for independence while also provoking parental intervention. They pull away from adult influences and turn to their peers, all the while engaging in behaviors that provoke adults to impose limits and set boundaries.  It is in this time of tension that teens are asked, sometimes compelled, to attend therapy.  How does a therapist build a therapeutic relationship with a teen when such tensions exist?

This course will examine different approaches to beginning therapy with teenagers, particularly those who are not eager to attend sessions.  We will look at ways of moving beyond the “crisis of the day” towards building strong therapeutic rapport.  Finally, we will review parent work.  We will use case examples from both private practice and outpatient clinic settings.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • List three reasons adolescents may be referred to therapy.
  • Learn strategies for building rapport and engaging adolescents.
  • Apply different approaches to parent work.
  • Apply techniques for moving beyond the “crisis of the day”.
