CLINICAL EDUCATION MEETINGS - A Conversation with Jay R. Greenberg, Ph.D.

Date: Mar 20, 2018 10:00 am
Details: March 20th

A Conversation between the Audience and Jay R. Greenberg, Ph.D.

Since the beginning of his career as a psychoanalyst, Jay R. Greenberg has been interested in creating conversations among analysts working within different conceptual, institutional, and geographic traditions, and in participating in those conversations. His first book, Object Relations in Psychoanalytic Theory (written with Stephen Mitchell and published in 1983) was an exercise in comparative psychoanalysis, aimed at bringing the ideas of  little known and/or  marginalized theorists in the United States into dialogue with those of the dominant Freudian/ego psychological tradition. His second book, Oedipus and Beyond: A Clinical Theory (1991) illustrates this process of mutual interrogation. As former Editor of Contemporary Psychoanalysis (1994-2001), North American Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis (2007-2010), and current Editor of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly (2011-present) Greenberg's emphasis on dialogue among the different traditions is evident. He believes this awareness of difference is also essential to working clinicians, and that a liveliness comes from wondering and being uncertain about what we are doing with our analysands. This emphasis runs through his teaching, and a series of papers written over the past decade, and continues to transform our work in the USA and beyond.
