Psychoanalysis, Democracy, and the Eros of Free Speech
Jill Gentile, PhD is a faculty member at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and faculty and supervisor at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity. She is a corresponding editor of Contemporary Psychoanalysis; and on the editorial boards of Psychoanalysis, Self, She has published many scholarly journal articles and her public essays have been featured in the Huffington Post, the New School's Public Seminar, and the Los Angeles Review of Books' Philosophical Salon. Her book, Feminine Law: Freud, Free Speech, and the Voice of Desire, with Michael Macrone (Karnac, 2016) examines the mutual relevance between psychoanalysis and democracy through the lenses of free speech and the female body. She was awarded the 2017 Gradiva Award for her essay, "What is special about speech?" She has also served as a consultant to the film The Tale, which will premiere at Sundance in 2018.
