Massive Trauma, Social Alienation, and Psychosis; Encounters with Chronically Psychiatrically Hospitalized Survivors
Irit Felsen, Ph.D.is a clinical psychologist specializing in trauma and traumaticloss. Dr. Felsen is an Adjunct Professor at Yeshiva University, Ferkauf Graduate Schoolof Psychology. She is in private practice in NJ. Dr. Felsen received her B.A inPsychology from the University of Haifa, her M.A. in clinical Psychology from theHebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and her Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg, Germany. She completed her post-doctoral training at Yale University.
Dr. Felsen serves on an emergency response team for the delivery of servicesfollowing critical incidents, and is a co-chair of the trauma group of the NGO on MentalHealth in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations. She is a member of theAPA Trauma division, a member of the American Academy of Experts in TraumaticStress, and a researcher with the Yale University Trauma Study Group, where, togetherwith Dori Laub, she was a principal investigator in a study about trauma, PTSD andpsychosis, which is the topic of the upcoming presentation at the William Allen White Institute. The study was also the topic of a book published in 2017 by Routledge's Relational Psychoanalysis, entitled "Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony:Unwanted Memories".
Dr. Felsen has a particular interest in survivors of trauma, in post-traumaticreactions, resilience, and in intergenerational transmission of effects related to parentaltrauma. She was the Clinical Coordinator of services for Holocaust survivors at theJewish Family Services of Metrowest and a State certified NJ Mental Health Screener inEmergency Psychiatric services. Dr. Felsen is the daughter of Holocaust survivor parents.
Dr. Felsen's papers have been published in the International Handbook ofMultigenerational Legacies of Trauma, the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, theAmerican Journal of Psychiatry, the International Journal of Psychoanalytic SelfPsychology (now Journal of Psychoanalysis, Self and Context) and the journal of Psychoanalytic Psychology.
