On the Social in the Subject
There is still much confusion in the field about how to be mindful of the socio-political. We will offer a brief theoretical overview of how we understand the current conversation between mainstream psychoanalytic discourse and cultural theory. We will focus in particular on how mainstream psychoanalysis continues to view the social as a later (less fundamental?) influence on individual development, and social realities as marginal to intra-psychic life. This in comparison to the ways social and cultural theory complicate and enrich our understanding of the subject, offering a perspective on subjectivity as always-already constituted through the socio-cultural.
We will work though our understanding of these terms by way of each presenting a short clinical vignette, and proceeding to discuss each other’s cases, inviting audience participation.
