Risky Business:

Helping Adolescents Mature and Cope

David Appelbaum, Psy.D.

Adolescence is a time when teens face significant risk, subject to behaviors such as bullying, harassment, drunk driving and peer aggression. This presentation discusses a specific video based intervention that integrates: empathy, developmental theory, brain research and knowledge of group dynamics to help adolescents deal with risk.

Dr Appelbaum will preview this intervention and discuss his participation in the making of the online video curriculum, "Risky Business" used in schools and other institutions to teach adolescents skills to better understand and manage risk.

David Appelbaum, PsyD is a faculty Member and Supervising Analyst of the William Alanson White Institute. He is also in Private Practice in NYC and Montclair, NJ, working with adults and adolescents. In collaboration with the creator of the program, Dr Steve Dranoff, he has helped to develop "Risky Business for High School," an online social emotional program to address issues of adolescent risk.

This is an invitation to explore and consider the many ways of thinking about the treatment of children, adolescents and their families.  How do we understand the person before us?  What is helpful in the short-term?  What produces lasting and meaningful change?  We will consider developmental, neuroscientific, and psychoanalytic approaches to understanding the meaning of symptomatic behaviors.
