"The Bully and the Bullied"

Charles Goodstein, M.D.

In recent years, we have witnessed long-overdue attention being devoted to bullying. Public consciousness has been raised, schools and workplaces have developed programs, legislative bodies have enacted laws, and courts have exacted penalties. That is as it should be. However, the focus of this presentation is not on society, but on the individual, particularly the individual in analysis and therapy: How has the experience of having been the victim, the perpetrator, or the silent bystander of bullying activity affected psychological development, symptom formation, and the therapeutic situation?

Charles Goodstein, M.D., a child, adolescent, and adult psychoanalyst who practices in Tenafly, NJ, is former chair of the child and adolescent analysis program at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education affiliated with the NYU School of Medicine, and is Professor of Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine.
