Pillars of My Work with Children and Adolescents
Constance L. Katz, Ph.D.
In this talk, I will present several aspects of working with children, adolescents and their parents that I have found to be essential in safeguarding the therapy, and preventing premature terminations of the work. They include establishing a working relationship with parents, dealing with the narcissistic vulnerability of both child patients and their parents, and strengthening the internal stance of the therapist in order to be prepared for inevitable difficult and surprising moments in these therapies. Six graduates of the institute’s Child-Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program, Sarah Bench, Ph.D., Karen Gennario, M.D., Adele Maddry, M.S., LCSW, Wendy Panken, LCSW, Lonnie Schick, LCSW will present with me, offering clinical vignettes that will illustrate these issues.
Dr. Katz is a co-founder of the Child-Adolescent Psychotherapy Training program, and served as its first Director of Training. She taught Developmental Issues in the Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program of the institute for many years, and was a Supervisor of Psychoanalysis in the same program. In private practice, she currently does short-term psychotherapy with adults, supervision, and consultations.
