Children & Adolescents

Seth Aronson, Ph.D.

Description and Learning Objectives:

Knowledge of developmental stages in work with children and adolescents is central to the treatment and understanding of issues with which these patients are struggling. Children and Adolescents are faced with navigating the intricacies of their psychic lives along with school pressures, caregiver and peers relationships. Interpersonal theory has made a significant contribution to how clinicians can work with this population.  At the conclusion of this class students will be able to:


1. Describe different stages of development in the Interpersonal Model.

2. Recognize specific interpersonal approaches in the treatment of children and adolescents.

3. Differentiate the interpersonal approach from other treatment modalities in clinical work with children and adolescents



Mark Blechner, Ph.D.

Description and Learning Objectives:

“Dreams are the royal road into the unconscious” and are often fascinating as well as mystifying. Patientsbring dreams into treatment, which are meaningful and revealing. How one understands dreams varies and it is challenging to develop technique in working with patient’s dreams. At the conclusion of this class students will be able to:


1. Describe the historical psychoanalytic ideas about the formation of dreams and the way they have been modified by psychoanalytic and neurobiological studies.

2. Widen your ability to integrate the different ways of understanding and working with dreams in clinical treatment.

3. Understand principles of group dream interpretation and have first-hand experience with this approach.


Comparative Theory

Christoper Bonovitz, PsyD

Description and Learning Objectives:

Psychoanalysis is a discipline rich in theory. Among various theoretical perspectives-from classical to contemporary: there are both contrasting and similar ideas and understandings of the mutative effects of psychoanalytic treatment.  In attempting to sort through how to understand and use theory in practice it is useful to begin to unpack theoretical constructs and their applications. At the conclusion of this class participants will be able to:


1. Identify and understand interpersonal theory and one or two contrasting psychoanalytic theories

2. Identify what each theory asserts as mutative in treatment of patients

3. Expand knowledge of theories through clinical application in a live supervision




Melissa Ritter, Ph.D.

Description and Learning Objectives:

Work with LGBTQ patients has historically been approached from a heteronormative theoretical perspective. Psychoanalytic treatment requires clinicians to develop specific knowledge and sensitivity to issues, which emerge in both social and psychic contexts of patients' experiences. An understanding of the transference/countertransference dynamics is a particularly important aspect in working the LGBTQ individuals. At the conclusion of the class participants will be able to:


1. Identify common intrapsychic/interpersonal challenges with which LGBTQ people are often confronted.

2. Examine the intersection of social context and the individual with particular focus on the consequent psychic strain for those identifying as LGBTQ and/or other.

3. Develop increased sensitivity to transference/countertransference (emphasis on the latter) issues encountered in work with LGBTQ people. Both case presentation and group discussion will be used for this purpose.


Eating Disorders

Jean Petrucelli, Ph.D.

Description and Learning Objectives:

Work with patients diagnosed with Eating Disorders is perplexing and challenging. Interpersonal theory offers a valuable and applicable understanding to treating patients who’s daily lives are inhabited by intense conflicts surrounding food and body image. To work with patients with Eating Disorders, it is also necessary for a clinician to be attuned to the complex transference/countertransference dynamics, which emerge in treatment. At the conclusion of the class participants will be able to:


1. Gain understanding of interpersonal theory and its application in approaching treatment with patients with Eating Disorder.

2. Increase understanding of underlying psychic struggles and conflicts, which contribute to Eating Disorders.

3. Identify transference/countertransference enactments that may occur in treating individuals with eating disorders.



Seth Aronson, Ph.D. is Training and Supervising Analyst, Director of Training, Faculty and Supervisor in the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program at the William Alanson White Institute. He is Faculty and a Supervisor at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. At Long Island University's doctoral program in clinical psychology, he teaches child and adolescent psychopathology and psychotherapy. For close to fifteen years, he has taught at PAS Institute and International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan. At Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, he facilitates process groups for rabbinical students. His publications cover topics such as mourning in the analyst, working as an Orthodox Jew and a psychoanalyst, play and supervision, and therapeutic action in child treatment. Most recently, he co-edited with Craig Haen, Ph.D. Handbook of Child and Adolescent Group Therapy. He is in private practice in New York.


Mark J. Blechner, Ph.D. is Training and Supervising Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute, and adjunct Clinical Professor and Supervisor at the New York University Post-Doctoral Program in Psychoanalysis.   He has published three books:  Sex Changes: Transformations in Society and Psychoanalysis (2009); The Dream Frontier (2001); and Hope and Mortality: Psychodynamic Approaches to AIDS and HIV (1997). He is former Editor-in-Chief of the journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis. He is in private practice in New York City, where he also leads private dream groups.


Christopher Bonovitz, PsyD is Faculty, Supervising & Training Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology & Clinical Consultant, New York University (NYU) Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis; Faculty & Supervisor, the Mitchell Center for Relational Studies, & the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis; Associate Editor, Psychoanalytic Dialogues & the Journal of Contemporary Psychoanalysis.


Melissa Ritter, Ph.D., psychologist-psychoanalyst, is a supervisor and faculty member at The William Alanson White Institute and adjunct clinical faculty at City College. She is the founder and former chair of the White Institute LGBTQ Study Group, and has lead a range of seminars on clinical work with LGBTQ identified people. Dr. Ritter is Co-Editor of Psychoanalysis in Action, a blog under the auspices of Psychology Today and Contemporary Psychoanalysis, as well as a former editorial reviewer for The International Journal of Psychoanalysis and Contemporary Psychoanalysis. She has written on topics including Grindr, female gender roles and romantic love. For many years professionally active in child welfare, she now works with adolescents and adults in private practice.


Jean Petrucelli, Ph.D. is a supervising analyst and faculty member, Conference Advisory Board (CAB) Chair; Director & Co-Founder of the Eating Disorders, Compulsions and Addictions Service (EDCAS);  and Founding Director of the Eating, Disorders, Compulsions & Addictions one year educational certificate program at The William Alanson White Institute. She is on the faculty of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and Co-Chair of the IH Faculty Selection and Curriculum Committee; and on the faculty for the Institute for Contemporary Psychology (ICP). She is an associate editor for Contemporary Psychoanalysis; Editor of five books: including winner of the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis (ABAPsa) 2016 Edited Book, Body-States: Interpersonal and Relational Perspectives on the Treatment of Eating Disorders (Routledge, 2015); and most recently, Co-editor with S. Schoen of Unknowable, Unspeakable and Unsprung: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Truth, Scandal, Secrets & Lies (Routledge, 2016). Dr. Petrucelli specializes in the interpersonal treatment of eating disorders and addictions and lectures nationally and internationally. She is in private practice on the upper west side in New York City.
