EDCAS Conference: Relinquishing our patients as sexual objects: Erotic countertransference and sexual infractions in psychoanalysis

Date: May 2, 2017 10:00 am
Details:

PRESENTER: Avgi Saketopoulou, Ph.D.

In our examination of sexual boundary violations, our professional conversations tend to emphasize defensive sexualization and psychodynamic factors like hatred, aggression, competitiveness, complex identifications/counteridentifications and enactments; we pay, however, little attention to sexuality per se. Do sexual transgressions really have nothing to do with the analyst's psychosexual responses to her patient? How can we take their force and embodiment seriously while also maintaining our ethical responsibilities to our patients?"

Bio: Avgi Saketopoulou, Ph.D. is on the faculty of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, the National Training Program at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, and the Stephen Mitchell Center. She serves on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and Studies in Gender and Sexuality and has received the Ruth Stein Prize, the Ralph Roughton award, the Symonds Prize and the 2014 annual prize of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Saketopoulou has published several articles and book chapters on trauma and its representation, on traumatic and normative gender, on psychosexuality and perversion and on the enigmatics of consent.
