A One Day Conference

Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Dating, Mating and Procreating

In 21^st Century America

The conference will explore how emerging technologies influence what people do to find each other, become couples, and create families. Presentations will address how innovations in dating, mating, and procreating influence both clinical work and psychoanalytic theory.  Topics to be covered include:

• A cross-cultural and historical look at how humans find mates
• Social networking and “hooking-up” in adolescence
• Online dating as both practical tool and way to express relationship fantasies
• The use of the internet during various stages of coming out
• Helping patients explore the wish to become single parents via Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)
• Socio-emotional consequences of new family structures created by ART
• Has ART made men irrelevant? A look at contemporary confusions in relating and mating
• Legal issues for clinicians when working with families and individuals using ART

This conference will provide participants an opportunity to both hear from experts and to explore in small groups their own 21^st century dilemmas about how people date, mate and procreate.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe contemporary changes in the ways straight and gay adults and adolescents find each other and become couples.
2. Describe how technology may be used both to foster and to inhibit the formation of healthy relationships.
3. Discuss some implications for psychoanalytic theory of recent developments in how people find each other, become couples, and create families.
4. Explain some of the legal issues that your patients who use ART to bring children into their families may confront.
5. Discuss the clinical implications of recent developments in how people date, mate and procreate.
