The William Alanson White Institute , located in a beautiful land-mark brownstone at 20 West 74th Street,  just off Central Park, is an internationally renowned, nonprofit psychoanalytic center with an outstanding faculty, prestigious history, and tradition of excellence. Founded in 1943, the Institute provides clinical services, advanced professional training, and outreach programs to a wide range of populations in New York City and surrounding communities.

At the Institute's Psychoanalytic Clinic and its Psychotherapy and Young Adult Clinics, and its Child and Family Center, an excellent  professional staff helps people with a diversity of issues at below-cost fees.   White also offers nine specialized treatment services for a variety of specific problems.  A description of these programs may be accessed by clicking on: http://www.wawhite.org/clinical_services/index.htm

Supporting the work of the Institute
The  White Institute depends on the generosity of its friends and supporters to maintain the high standard of psychoanalytic and psychotherapy training and treatment that it provides, The Institute is deeply thankful to its large faculty all of whom ( with the exception of of guest faculty) teach and have traditionally taught without remuneration. The Institute is also profoundly grateful to the community of donors whose philanthropy supports its mission.

In order that The Institute may thrive and flourish, all forms of support from its Donors are essential.  A donation to the Institute's Annual Appeal provides unrestricted revenue that permits the Institute to direct funds where they are most needed. These funds permit White to continue to subsidize its many educational programs;  to provide excellent below cost mental health services; to support its specialized services, to maintain its facilities; and to underwrite its many programs and its publications, some of which are offered to the lay and profesional public at no charge.

Endowed Gifts, in any form given, assure the permanency and constancy of the White Institute. Endowment funds are invested for the Institute and only the income generated from these funds is spent. A percentage of the principal may be spent annually, according to the rate established by the Institute's Board of Trustees.

A special Named Endowment Fund may be established with a minimum gift - usually in the amount of $50,000. Creating a named endowed gift is often the manner by which the donor honors a family member, or a person of considerable significance to the donor.  The donor may contact The Institute Development Office, which will work closely with the donor in determining where, among the many Named Giving giving opportunities available at White,  the Donor's interests lie, The Donor will be fully apprized of the use of the income from this gift,  and will receive an annual report describing the activities that the fund has made possible.

Donations are of exceptional importance in certain vital areas. For example the Institute is now seeking support to continue many projects and services of which three are:

The Project for Refugee and Immigrant Children and Families .
Immigrant and refugee families face special challenges as they try to build new lives that sustain continuity of attachments and culture while fostering new adaptations and growth. Refugee and immigrant children may struggle with feelings of distress, which are often manifested as learning and other dificulties such as social withdrwal. This Project links with some schools in the metropolitan area which serve these populations, and offers low-cost treatment to children and to parents. The cost to the Institute of treatment for each patient is about $2000 annually;

Living with Medical Conditions :   Individual and Group Psychological Services for people with Medical Conditions or Illnesses and for their families, friends and caregivers. This Program is designed to enable people to heighten their understanding of the impact of medical illness on everyday living, and to enable them to maintain and enhance a full and meaningful life as challenges are met and overcome.  This Program currently seeks funds of $5000 to educate people about these services and to bring services at below cost fees to those who need them.

Sponsoring a Clinic Patient: In its award-winning low-cost Clinical Services the White Institute offers excellent treatment to a wide range and diverse population of patients.  This dynamic psychotherapy is informed by a strong psychoanalytic foundation which teaches therapists how to listen in depth to patients, and how to help patients explore aspects of  self with consistency, depth, and intensity. Patients at the Institute are offered several modalities of  treatment but most come for psychotherapy or for psychoanalysis.  Fees often range from eight dollars to $50 per session yet costs to the clinic may be at least $2000 per patient on an annual basis.  Contributions to the clinic will make a difference in the lives of those who seek help.
