Personality can change in a positive direction as one grows older. This is not simply a wishful opinion, but a conclusion based on a recent large-scale study. It means that one's later years can be a time for enhanced satisfaction in living. The entire orientation of White Institute Services supports growth throughout the life cycle. This applies whether treatment is undertaken to resolve current difficulties, to explore one's past history in greater depth, or to search out possibilities for the future.
Not only does each phase of living offer its own particular opportunities, but certain kinds of problems also are more likely to arise. Among the more frequent ones are the readjustments that go along with retirement, the physical infirmities of aging, the loss of a spouse or of friends, financial worries, family conflict, and the prospect of death and dying. Cumulatively, they can contribute to increased loneliness, anxiety, and depression.
For many years now, the Older Adult Clinical Services at White has been staffed by highly trained and dedicated professionals- psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers-who offer psychotherapy for people in their sixties and beyond. Among the available choices are individual, couple, group, and family therapies. Other projects will be introduced as required. Experienced psychiatrists always are available for medical consultation. Our methods and procedures are under continuing expert review, in accordance with the standards of the best service, educational, and research institutes.
Treatment takes place at the White Institute or in the therapist's private office. The service can accept insurance coverage or Medicare in partial payment of fees, and it offers flexible fee structure for people of limited means.
