Our approach in working with children, adolescents,
parents and families is based on an understanding that all human
experience is fundamentally interpersonal. Children are most usefully
understood in the context of their relationships, their families,
their schools, and their
socio-cultural environments.
We are located at the Institute, a beautiful landmark brownstone
at 20 West 74th Street, just off Central Park. Our staff are highly
trained child mental health professionals, including psychologists,
social workers, and psychiatric nurses. The Center is directed by
senior psychologists who have administered and supervised work with
children for many years in private practice, clinics, schools, hospitals,
and agencies. We offer our neighborhood and the surrounding community
a variety of services for children and families:

our services, we provide a direct, flexible, active, and collaborative
attitude in the effort to engage the youngster, family, school,
or organization. Years of clinical expertise, combined with a
warm, open-minded, non-authoritarian stance, allow us to make a
difference for the people we serve. We especially value the creation
of linkages within a family, between a family and a school, and
among all the professionals involved working with a child.

Parents,
children and adolescents typically experience their difficulties
in relation to their families, school or peer group. The interpersonal
therapist understands the critical role of engaging each of these
important systems whenever it is an important part of the treatment
process. Periodic communication with parents and school authorities
(with parental consent) is a significant component of the work.

To initiate treatment, please call (212 873-7070), write or visit
the clinic to obtain an application form. NEW: you may also download

For
children under 12, an initial consultation with parents or guardians
will be arranged to collect background information and to clarify
the nature of the child's difficulty. In addition to the parent
consultation, each child is seen for one or more diagnostic sessions.
The results of the assessment and a treatment plan are then communicated
to the parents.
It should
be noted that not everyone who applies to the clinic can be accommodated,
nor will the clinic's services be appropriate for every applicant.
In such cases, the clinic will do everything possible to refer the
applicant to an appropriate therapist or clinical facility.
The Autistic Spectrum Service |
The Autistic Service was developed to address the particular needs of children and adolescents on the autistic spectrum as well as their families, as they confront difficult and specific issues.
Our service offers:
- Individual psychotherapy
- Dyadic and small group psychotherapy
- Parental guidance and support
- School Consultation
What are autistic spectrum disorders?
In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders, including:
- High-functioning autism
- Asperger’s Syndrome
- Pervasive Developmental Disorder
These disorders are characterized by a constellation of symptoms including
- Abnormalities of speech
- Lack of eye contact
- Limited understanding of interpersonal relationships, social cues, and emotions
Children are typically diagnosed with these disorders during the preschool years. Consequently, there has been an expansion of early intervention and early childhood programs addressing the educational and psychological needs of these children. With these interventions many of the children eventually enter mainstream educational settings.
However, there are few services that also address the specific needs and issues of these older children and adolescents. These issues include:
- Peer relationships
- Dating
- Support for parents and siblings
- Planning for more independent lives
Our orientation
We focus on respect for the strengths and capacities of each child, with an emphasis on building peer relationships and developing a better understanding of social demands. We offer active guidance and support for parents facing the special challenges these children present.
