BIPOLAR
DISCUSSION GROUP
Throughout
one's lifetime struggle with bipolar illness situations may arrive
that could be addressed in a peer group setting. This weekly peer
discussion group, with a therapist facilitator, will focus on
helping
individuals with mood disorders review how they manage interpersonal
and practical problems with their families and careers. Outside
speakers may also be invited to discuss topics of interest to
the group. Membership in the group should be seen as a supplement
to your individual psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. Participants
must be referred by their physician. For further information please
call the clinic office at 212-873-7070.
Applicants to the group should discuss their participation with
their primary therapist and/or their prescribing physician to
determine it joining the group at this time would be helpful.
The group is designed for individuals with careers and whose symptoms
have been relatively stable. Although the group will not be confrontational
in nature, receiving feedback about your behavior and personality
could at times be somewhat distressful. The group is an opportunity
to think out loud about your coping strategies and to reexamine
unhelpful behaviors that may be getting in your way. Meeting initially
with the group therapist can give both you and our clinic a chance
to determine the best starting time. Given our efforts to balance
the group's membership, openings may not always been available.
